An increasing population, urban expansion and greater consumption are creating a mounting waste management problem in Australia, with the amount of waste produced increasing year on year. The Australian Government’s National Waste and Resource Recovery Reporting data indicates there was around 75.6 million tonnes of waste generated in 2022–23 – an average of 2.88 tonnes per person. The total volume of construction and demolition waste was 29.2 million tonnes, which is almost 39% of the waste in the country. The figures show how important it is to use effective collection, sorting and disposal methods in formulating the goal of sustainability.

In NSW 68% of construction and demolition waste was recycled in 2023–24 compared to the overall recycling rate of 80%. The results show that a considerable percentage of waste can be diverted from a landfill if a suitable collection and sorting system is put in place.
Environmental Benefits Other Than Landfill Diversion
Skip bin systems offer environmental advantages beyond just preventing the accumulation of waste in landfills. By recovering resources, virgin raw materials are not needed, minimising the environmental impacts caused by the extraction, processing and transport of raw materials. In road construction, civil engineering, for instance, concrete aggregates acquired from recycling can be used as substitutes for newly quarried aggregates. Likewise, the energy needed to treat metal recovered is significantly lower than that needed to extract/refine from original/ virgin mineral resources. Restrictions and Difficulties in The Current System
The benefits of skip bins are still relatively limited and do not provide a solution for the issues in Australia regarding waste. Downstream processing and regulatory controls are key to the success of any skip bin system. Results from the State’s national reporting show no obvious improvements in the nation’s recovery system and that plastics continue to be a significant deficit. Despite the growth in recycling infrastructure investment, plastic recycling rate was still in 2022-23, at 12.5 % only. Meanwhile, the amount of plastic waste also rose 14.5% from the previous reporting period. As can be seen from these figures, sustainable outcomes in relation to collections are not guaranteed.
Another source of contamination is from construction waste. Asbestos and other contaminants have been found within construction and demolition recovered products, resulting in investigations.
